If you are in the manufacturing business and plan to start to use rubber components as parts during building processes, there is a good chance that you will come across some new terms that are you are not familiar with. Working with rubber is a different process than working with plastics or metals, so understanding the terms associated with rubber manipulation and finishing is important. Rubber vulcanization is just one example of an often-unfamiliar process for relatively new manufacturers, but it is extremely important to understand. Here is a look at some of the common questions regarding rubber vulcanization and the answers you do need to know. 

What is rubber vulcanization and why is it important?

In simple terms, rubber vulcanization is a process that manufacturers use to turn rubber composites and pieces into a finished and usable part or component. Vulcanization is achieved through different processes that can include everything from chemical additives and mediums to harden the rubber to pigmenting dyes to color the rubber to a certain hue. Vulcanization does not simply shape the rubber into its usable form, it can also alter certain qualities like the rubber's strength, elasticity, hardness, durability, and even heat resistance. 

What are the different rubber vulcanization processes?

There is a full list of different ways rubber is vulcanized, and a lot of the processes used are varied according to what the end result should be or what the initial rubber polymer is that is used. A few examples of the different forms of rubber vulcanization include:

  • Open vulcanization, which injects steam or hot air into the rubber to shape it and is done in an open atmosphere
  •  Saturated steam vulcanization, which involves placing the rubber component into an autoclave or another receptacle
  • Continuous vulcanization, which is a process that involves using a liquid, gas, or energy curing medium to alter the shape of the rubber

What does it mean to deflash a piece of vulcanized rubber?

Deflashing a piece of vulcanized rubber is just a technical term for trimming off the excess pieces. After a piece of rubber is processed into its final state, it can have small tidbits of rubber remaining that must be trimmed off to achieve the proper end shape. Deflashing is most often done by hand with small blades or scissors by a team of rubber workers. However, there are some machines designed specifically for automated deflashing as well.
